I’ve noticed an interesting conundrum in the world of MSP selection: Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) seeking the services of a managed service provider for IT Support lack the expertise needed to select the right provider. Put another way, the expertise they are seeking is the very expertise they require to make the best choice.
This lack of expertise has major implications for the business, including making the searching and vetting process unnecessarily long, difficult, and overly subjective. One of our recent customers confessed that despite their best efforts, they were basically left “guessing” which MSP to select.
Just as “Hope isn’t a strategy,” neither is guessing. When SMBs are forced to guess which MSP will best serve their business, they often guess wrong, a point underscored by the high dissatisfaction and switching rates that plague the MSP space.
This lack of expertise doesn’t just hurt the customer, it impacts MSPs, too. In a recent discussion with a top influencer in the MSP space, I heard about this “expertise gap” from the MSP’s perspective. “In the sales process, we often run into clients who don’t know enough about their IT systems, compliance and cybersecurity needs, service level requirements, and growth plans to really say what they want, which is often a set up for failure for both parties.”
At MSPwiz, we are actively filling this expertise gap to efficiently match businesses with the right MSPs. I have personally experienced the matching process from both sides, first as “the IT guy” for an SMB, next as the owner of my own MSP, and then as a fractional CIO who hired MSPs for medium and large businesses.
I know from experience how to help a company select the right MSP. But I didn’t want to simply create a consultancy that matched SMBs and MSPs “by hand.” I saw an opportunity to embed the needed expertise – both my own and that of the SMB and MSP community – into a technology platform that automated most of the search, vetting, and selection process.
I say “most,” because there is still room for human conversation, intervention, and decision-making. The MSPwiz service marries the best of AI and process automation (which performs the heavy lifting that takes the guesswork out of the process, while rapidly speeding it up) with the personal human touch of advisors who care for all parties in the transaction and have the experience to help the customer make the right decision.
